Job Summary
Reporting to the PIC, the Charging Operator is responsible for executing one of the most safety‑critical functions in underground mining: the correct preparation, loading, and initiation of explosive rounds. The operator ensures that blast designs are implemented accurately to achieve planned advance without compromising ground stability, equipment, or personnel. This role is central to maintaining the development cycle and directly influences daily production performance.
Key Responsibilities
The Charging Operator prepares primers, loads emulsion or packaged explosives into drilled holes, and connects firing circuits exactly as per engineering specifications. Duties include verifying drilling accuracy, adjusting charging sequences to match ground conditions, managing emulsion pumping units, and ensuring all safety barricades and warning systems are correctly deployed. The operator conducts thorough post-blast inspections, checks for misfires and follows strict protocols under the Explosives Act. Maintaining accurate charging records, communicating hazards, and coordinating closely with the PIC and jumbo crews are essential components of the role.
Qualifications & Experience
A valid Underground Blasting License and driver's license are mandatory. At least five years of specialized underground blasting experience in mechanized mining is required, alongside excellent hazard identification skills and a flawless safety record.
