Job Summary

Reporting to the Jumbo Operator, the Jumbo Assistant provides essential ground‑level support to maintain efficient, safe drilling operations in high‑speed underground development. This is a physically demanding role requiring strong situational awareness, excellent teamwork, and the ability to work in confined, noisy, and wet mining environments. The assistant ensures that the operator can maintain continuous drilling cycles by managing key operational tasks that keep the rig productive.

Key Responsibilities

The Jumbo Assistant handles heavy trailing cables, water hoses, and air lines, ensuring they do not become entangled or damaged during drilling. The assistant changes drill steels and bits, clears debris around the work area, supports scaling activities, and helps position the rig in narrow or angled drives. Responsibilities also include conducting minor mechanical checks, preparing consumables, assisting with hose extensions during level changes, guiding equipment during tramming, and ensuring proper illumination of the drilling area. The assistant conducts safety checks, places barricades, and communicates hazards to the operator and nearby crews. Keeping the face clean and ensuring the drilling pattern remains accessible are essential duties that directly support drilling quality.

Qualifications & Experience

A BGCSE or equivalent is required, with 2 years' experience working as a jumbo assistant. Physical fitness, mechanical aptitude, and strong safety discipline are mandatory.
